Maria Bertrán is a Venezuelan artist showing in Britain for the first time. She lives most of the year in California but has spent the summer months in Provence for nearly 20 years. Bertrán is not afraid of applying thick amounts of paint to the canvas, nor is she averse to strong colours juxtaposed with traditional compositions. |

Finding beauty in everyday objects, she transposes in her vision the effects of light on, say, a 17th century doorway or the shimmering of a hay bail under the intense summer sun. Her scope also includes the figure, working with a live model, adding her childhood memories and influences to the themes of her paintings. Maria has exhibited widely in the USA, Canada, South America and Europe. |
