Foreword by Ian Courcoux

Many of Colin Carruthers's paintings in this show are the result of his most recent visit to the western coastline and isles of Scotland and mark, in my opinion, a clear development in his work. |

Colin has often travelled to this part of the country. He loves the light, the remoteness and the unspoilt nature of rugged, beautiful coastline which is hard to find in too many parts of our island nation today. |
Travelling to Ardnamurchan, viewing Sanna Bay for the first time, with its brilliant white deserted sands, is a thrill for anyone and Carruthers captures its wildness and solitude wonderfully. And that beautiful sunset on Islay... |
There are some subtle innovations within this series of paintings. A still life foreground, with a view to the sea through a window and buildings breaking up desolate views in others bring new areas of interest and perspective. But one of my favourite paintings in this collection is a gentle triptych of a gate on the edge of woodland - so the show's not all about sea and sand. |
