He invites the viewer to use imagination to interpret the superbly crafted images which lie on the paper - even the titles do not give much of a clue to Stephen's own thought processes in producing the work. He is one of the very top echelon of artists working in this country today.
Stephen has kindly written this statement which may give the reader a little more insight into the compelling work of this hugely talented artist.

"In artistic terms printing is my second language. This is not a false modesty, it is my belief that many of the most interesting prints have been made by artists whose primary practice lies elsewhere - Braque, Picasso, Warhol, Hockney, Caulfield, the list is long.
Printing allows a different thought, to invent at a different speed. Both in terms of creative playfulness - there are great journeys to be had whilst standing at my table top, brush and ink in hand. But also in terms of changing colour, and consequently tempo, within the image. This can happen quickly and the results can be dramatic.

"The images in these prints are unspecified narratives, devoid of beginning or end. The viewer is invited to fill those gaps, and that is their point, to tantalise and enchant. To provoke the 'what ifs' and 'I wonder'.
The use of rich colour and mesmeric pattern is deployed to visually seduce. A 'come hither', a type of lure to invite enquiry. It allows the images to remain simple and is fundamental to what I do.
It is always my hope that the resulting work is affirmative. That the sensation of being with one of these pieces is greater than the sum of their parts. That perhaps is my job as the artist."
