The moment when a woman discovers that she is pregnant
has a potential for transcendent grace whether the news comes via the
Archangel Gabriel or her G.P. . In the Bible story Mary delivers a paean
of great humility and beauty at this dramatic moment : "My soul magnifies
the Lord..." - The Magnificat. It is also, as for every woman, a
phenomenon of deep mystery for Mary, and I have tried to evoke something
of this in the composition. Also, having always had much sympathy with
Mary's husband, Joseph, in the story, I have depicted him here with a
halo, in the favourite colour of my childhood (before I loved all colours
equally, as a matter of principle) and with a bodily transparency that
might indicate his lack of guile and conceit.
