The two cats, Murphy and Squirrel, are the pair we had when the picture was painted (we still have them both). Murphy, the black and white, has a large presence. Squirrel is older and in reality a big, tubby grey and white. Her nature, however, is colourful and she is only glum because food is not in the picture. The big house was opposite my old work-room window. The terrace to the right of it, which it dwarves, is from further back in our past. The big house has a cabbage patch and is called "Glyn". The sky is bright and breezy and colour-coded. The dark clouds are held at bay by the pearly, pacific light. The sea is domestic and user-friendly, a near sea. The brass vase is a balancing feature in the composition, a vessel for what you will. |
