The Birth of India
Acrylic on panel

The clock states the time: 1947, Independence. India is still asleep under its tangerine ground sheet, head resting against a hill-station. The old lion-monkey, symbol of empire gone native, keeps an eye on the white mouse which is bent on mischief. The green elephant surveys his sleeping twin. The monkey-monkey has picked up a cowboy hat from across the sea. The bright fish-bird surfaces in Goa and looks on. The couple on the beach are holidaying in Kerala and basically they haven't got a clue about any of this. Nor do they need to.
