It will be evident to anyone who knows Southampton F.C.'s old ground that I've never been there. Anyway, as this is in the realm of imagination, I've permitted myself to show a time when Blackpool were a force in the land and Southampton, as newcomers to the top flight, could be shown a thing or two by the illustrious Tangerines. I have portrayed the build-up and execution of a goal simultaneously, a pictorial conceit that compresses a succession of moments into one and which, I hope, makes a virtue of necessity - the necessity being to show the full sweeping glory of Blackpool's football in those days when you could have white, freckled legs and still play for England. |
