Having, at his mother's instigation, deceitfully obtained his father's blessing, which should rightly have been bestowed on his brother Esau, Jacob is despatched to the house of his mother's brother, Laban. While resting for a night on his journey, Jacob has a dream about a ladder up to Heaven upon which angels are ascending and descending. On awakening he declares the place in which he has slept to be the very House of God, or Bethel. I have shown Esau in this picture as a lion, the deception which separated the brothers as a dark, winged figure and their eventual reconciliation as a bridge slung between two outcrops of rock. |
