My first impression of Lofty Bouthmire was of a smug twat and basically this opinion hasn't changed. Of course, his way with animals was legend among the tabby folds of coastal West Custardshire where I live, and I had first-hand experience of this when one evening he called on our low dwelling handing out leaflets for a forthcoming frog derby in Nether Flap Farm's top field. As I came downstairs to answer his knock, I saw him through the window, charming my daughter's rabbit into a curious kneeling position in it's pen by the coal shed. This rabbit had always fled in abject fear from anything, even the approach of next door's miniature tortoise and, lingering at the window, I couldn't help but marvel at this display of almost mystical bonding. When later I learned, by way of Tibby Bristledine, that Boothmire was born with a complete absence of external genitalia, my sense of wonder deepened ..... .
