Speaking to my daughter on the phone shortly after August's solar eclipse, she said : "Didn't it make you feel small and insignificant in the face of it ?". I didn't disagree with what seemed a popular verdict, but in truth it had made me feel like a giant. I chose to celebrate the eclipse collecting firewood along the lane that runs by our cottage, and the whole thing had a biblical feel to me. Specifically early biblical - Genesis - where some beings were very large and some achieved astronomical ages, as though they hadn't yet resolved themselves into ordinary people. These beings didn't seem to be especially highly evolved, like angels or prophets, but primitive, elemental and somehow products of an irrational science.
