The young brothers have been labouring in the garage of their family home to assemble the kit bought for them for Christmas by their father, a keen peruser of the mail order pages of Family Idyll magazine, so popular in the Fifties. The day has come for the beach trial of their creation: 4 o'clock of a February afternoon finds the twins dragging it through the sand hills. In the valley at the foot of the roly-poly hill, atop which yawns the sleepy beach-guardian lion, they have to run the gauntlet of the inebriate, homeless war veteran, Mr McCue, who lives on the handouts of the shopkeepers and housewives of the borough, whose charity does not quite extend to taking him in, however.
