In the winter of 1946, a number of local artists were commissioned by the Chamber of Trade to produce original designs from which postcards of this then-flourishing seaside resort might be made. This painting of mine is in turn a faithful copy of a composition by an obscure and eccentric watercolourist by the name of Teflon Whittock who had moved to the town after his demob, and which resides in a very distressed condition in the vaults of the municipal museum.

Suffice it to say that no postcards were reproduced from the work, the recondite meaning of which Whittock took with him to the grave when, at the height of the 1947 season, he plunged to his death from the cliffs on the north side of Constitution Hill whilst apparently celebrating the birthday of his pet hare.

Whittock had no living relatives of the human variety but left a small menagerie of exotic animals to the stationmaster at Borth. One of these, a very old dwarf Sumatran elephant, survives, and it was from her I was granted permission to recreate the original design.
