This might have been called "The Universal Gardener" or, perhaps, "The Reluctant Gardener". Mostly, however, what it turned out to be about as I painted it was the phenomenal and sublime peacefulness of Grassgill House, where we are now fortunate to live. It was a fine summer day at the time and, as I sat outdoors, I felt supremely happy. By their nature, these moments and feelings cannot last and I find that if you seek to prolong them for their own sake boredom, and even a kind of trivialising and selfish remoteness, can set in. This is exactly what the lionet admonishes Mr Serene-But-Stupid about. |
