Someone asked me if the giant eyeball represented Big Brother or if it was some other comment on the age of global terrorism and the ubiquity of public surveillance. If it is then it is unintentional but the question -- posed actually by myself, I confess -- prompted me to wonder why it is that this partially housed eye symbol recurs in recent paintings. I developed an explanation, the gist of which is that the eye is not connected to any known intelligence and simply lives peacefully in the landscape. Not really an explanation -- more a disclaimer. |
