I painted this shortly after the death of our senior cat, Murphy, as a tribute to him. It shows our six cats having a space adventure and Murphy is the black and white fellow to the left of the console, chatting across to his old friend, Squirrel. The little black cat peering out of the window is Tufty, whilst on the opposite side Possum nurses a mug of tea. At the back are Possum's brothers Bertie, the ginger, and Buster, the piebald. When I started the painting I intended that, as well as having a happy and light-hearted aspect, it might be also something of a meditation on animal mortality and the after-life, and though this might seem a little pretentious it nevertheless is such, insofar as I was thinking in a protective way about Murphy's spirit and how I wanted it to be in a place of companionship and beauty and even joy. At the time I was completing the picture there was talk in the news of a new discovery that space might be beige. I didn't know what this meant but, of course, like everyone else with any imagination in his heart and hope in his soul, I rebelled instinctively against such a notion.. |
