In the pleasant suburban streets just along from Queen Maggot's, and between The Promenade and The Drive, George (surname unknown) was a common sight carrying shopping to his lodgings at the widow Hilda Haddock's in Laverton road, with one or other of his beloved rabbits for company. So odd were his looks, however, that he never failed to attract stares and speculation.

Mrs Haddock, an excellent woman, would never divulge information about George and many myths, a lot of them unkind, grew up about him and the relationship with his landlady. But it wasn't until much later that their story was truly told in a remarkable radio play by the prize-winning author Fergus Thomas-Robertson, who grew up locally and, after the death of George, briefly lodged with Mrs Haddock.

His sole purpose had been to get to the bottom of the mystery but such professionalism alone would have availed him little if it hadn't been for the fact that he happened to strike up a deep and abiding friendship with his landlady, who came to think of him as the "second son" she never had.
