I have a great respect for psychiatrists. The ones I've encountered have all possessed a fearsome, chilling intelligence and though I understood that, off-duty, they would doubtless be great fun -- daftness itself -- I could never seem to shed my defensive and awesome inferiority complex with regard to them, which is unfair to them and me. This one, caught in an unguarded moment in a bodega in southern Spain, gives way to a moment of despair and self-blindness. He had slipped into seeing himself as Goya in old age. |
