Often -- more often than you think -- there is no real verbal equivalent
to the imagery in a painting. I had vaguely wanted to have a scene incorporating
some kind of benign monster or monsters and ended up -- God knows why
-- with a spherically headed man and a giant pear on a rock in a landscape.
Perhaps he gazed into the moon until his head became blue moonlike.
As I continue to produce paintings from my imagination so I have to
dig deeper to come up with something that corresponds to the visual
aspect of the work and, in a paradoxical way, profundity produces a
sort of superficiality. |
