Knut Hamsun, the eminent Norwegian writer, has been invited by the cocky young Ernest Hemingway to come over to the US to enter a writing contest against him. The precise challenge is "to see which of us can write the trousers off the other man". Everything in Hamsun rebels against such brash machismo and, besides, he is much older and more reflective now, at a time in his life and career when doubts creep in -- vaguely terrible doubts which, to countenance, might spell his death as a writer, he fears. But, of course, his pride overcomes all this and, characteristically, he sets off on foot from his home to the point of embarkation.with his furry friends Robert and Nina, as always, keeping him company............ |
