Foreword by Ian Courcoux

John Charlesworth's paintings just seem to get better and better. The detail, the composition and the brush strokes are all executed with great thought, patience and confidence.

Equally, the narratives -- such an integral part of any Charlesworth painting -- seem to get increasingly bizarre. They are written very much with tongue in cheek and I always feel that, while they may not tell you a great deal about the painting, they do give you some insight into the mind of the artist.

On average, Charlesworth paints fifteen works each year but much of his time is spent dreaming up his compositions. I am often asked how John comes up with the ideas. I haven't the faintest idea -- and neither has he!

Since his last show in 2003 John has moved with his wife Sarah from Cumbria to Dorset and has completed three paintings while in his new abode. I cannot honestly say that I see any notable difference since the move -- I hope that this is an indication of a seamless transition.

John Charlesworth is an artist of immense artistic talent and humour. As with all his shows, this one should definitely not be missed.
