This painting dates back about 14 years and I include it because it asked me to do so. It's never been given a fair hearing, or viewing, it tells me. When I painted it, I was 43, as the badge worn by Mr Teapot-Head states. Some artists, some great artists in fact, were dead well before they reached 43. They had arrived long before then at a mature style, amazingly mature some of them. You can see that I wasn't mature at 43, far from it. In many ways I was always a slow developer. But I was serious and, do you know, though perhaps I shouldn't say this, I like my younger self. |
