It was not the vile offside appeals by Preston players that invalidated this fabulous last-minute winning "goal" by Ormerod-Suddick at the very death of the 1957 - 2001 season, but an obscure quirk of the FA's rules, long since ironed out. Which was that a minor infringement of civilian law could, in certain circumstances, translate to the Association Football Code and cause a halt in the natural ebb and flow of play. P.C. Boach, on floodlight duty in the north-west corner of the ground, had from his elevated vantage point spotted Ormerod-Suddick's tangerine Maserati skirtpuller unlawfully parked in the private car park of Grantham's Signs in Charnley Road. Just as the ball was beating the flailing grasp of North End keeper Bird and was about to dip beneath the bar, Boach entered the name of Ormerod-Suddick - with the time of the offence - into his notepad. It typified Blackpool's long season of frustration, given up on by their long-suffering supporters well before this bizarre final fixture. |
