A Light unto the Gentiles
Acrylic on wood panel

Christmas is where you find it. Anyone who clings to a nostalgic view of it but who, year by year, has been disabused of the fond notion that Christmas Past can be recreated if certain conditions are fulfilled, will come to know this. I once found Christmas in a howling gale at the corner of Talbot Road Bus Station in Blackpool, the corner where the 11a to Lytham used to draw up.

Please don't think you've strayed into the notes for a quite different painting. The one before me has two foxes on a promontory and, as I write, Christmas 2004 is just passing into the bleak and unknown territory of 2005. As it once struck me that Christ might be represented as a rabbit, so it now occurs to me that John the Baptist might also be rendered thus. Or John the Bactus, as I like to call him.
