This particular painting strayed so far from its original conception that it eventually shook me off altogether. However, I can say that the title refers not to a sort of common upon which prostitutes ply their trade but to a colour in Daler-Rowney's range of artists acrylic paints. Normally I buy the very pungent and powerful Phthalo Green but as this was unavailable I tried the Hooker's, a subtly-hued pigment that I found myself coaxing to reveal its essential nature rather than trying to subdue, as I invariably need to do with Phthalo Green. The result may well be the same, I don't know, but the process was quite different. |
