In the 50's when Rupert Bear was Prime Minister and rabbuts held sway in the countryside, there was an Angel of the North that preceded Antony Gormley's present monument, one that was much more impressive really but to which the local populace was equally indifferent. Trust rabbuts! This divinity was alive, moreover, and grew from the earth. None, though, could decipher its message and so it was largely ignored. So much so, in fact, that it withdrew forever on the eve of 1960. What could not be ignored, however, in this cosy and yet precarious idyll were the cultural shockwaves emanating from across the Atlantic. Little Richard screeching from her Aunt Mathilda's 14" Bush would change young Belinda forever, as who wouldn't it?!! |
