Do you remember the old Don Gibson song? It was always a favourite of mine and I always loved the title. Such a wild, extravagant image, like the best popular music. On that subject, I've often wondered just where older stars, still performing but now leading quieter lives, draw their subject matter from. Many still sing about essentially young situations. Even the likes of Bert Jansch, who will sing with wonderfully unfashionable candour about his love for his mother, a "real" subject, sings more often about romance and heartache and dangerous women. It's like me always painting young women and scenes of torment. Partly I don't know how old I am most of the time and partly I live in my head, where I might as well be 25 as 57. |
