Sinking the Tom Barrett
Acrylic on wood panel
24" diameter
£2,350

I don't suppose you should name names but after all this time who really cares? Besides, I have to write something.

The Tom Barrett of the title was a tutor of mine at university, a red-bearded, pipe-smoking character who, as he pronounced upon a student's work, would rock back on his heels and address the junction of wall and ceiling, ginger eyelashes constantly flickering shut. I was a naive, sensitive and diffident Northern boy and he was a bastard to me. Perhaps he disliked me for all these qualities. I also feel sure he was jealous of some of us, for our very youth and inchoate talent.

This painting, then, is a mild and belated revenge. It's also nothing to do with any of this stuff.
