Things Nobody Knows
Acrylic on wood panel

By all accounts this family living in the old police house in Maulds Meaburn are very nice people, The husband's a bit of a klutz - well, a lot of a klutz, actually - but people like him see things others don't. Remember Michael in 'Ryan's Daughter', for instance, and the things he saw. By the way, John Mills should have won an Oscar for that part, for the foot-clonking scene in the pub alone. It might interest you to know that in some ways I myself aspire to the condition of Michael and often, in private moments, copy his mannerisms.

Anyway, this isn't Michael, it's Peapode Spones, husband of Anne, father of Michaela, and he's been watching something invisible to them, namely a sinister horseman riding by in the direction of Bell End under the gaze of a dark sun. Peapode is greatly relieved he has passed without stopping, and shall speak nothing of it. Tonight he will sleep surrounded by animals, as people such as him often do.
