At the time of painting this my wife Satsuma was embroiled in a long and bitter campaign against slugs in the veg plot. The slugs of '06 were a vintage crew, warriors to a man. Anyway every evening she lined up her captives against the shed wall to be shot, and of a morning I would look at the little corpses in their tragic attitudes of death and think: You know, slugs are only human too. Developing this theme and as an exercise against negative stereotyping I decided to show in my little picture just how useful a citizen a slug can be.
This one here, as you see, is baby-sitting whilst the infant's parents visit a sick relative in the island's hospital. The island? The Greek island of Cumbrae, reached by hovercrab from the mainland city of Largos.
