The man-boy looking out of the bay window with his cat, despite having a young (and pregnant) wife, is a bit of a loner inhabiting a rather solemn world of his own. Painting his face, which finally came to bear the look I wanted for him, was a funny business, as it always is when I come to invent a face. I don't really know where to start and in casting about for something to build on and develop many faces and expressions emerge. At one stage it was my sister, at another Rod Steiger, whom he still resembles in this finalised state. I didn't know it but it was Rod Steiger's air of resignation I wanted. |
