Rock of Ages

Heaven of any sort is a curious notion. You don't really get any closer to an understanding or an accommodation with it as you get older and, because of this, perhaps a child's idea of heaven is as good as any.
When I was young, not a child but very immature in many ways and still very drawn to dreams of childhood, I made my first etching and it was on this theme. I could only think of a spaceship coming down to me in a lonely field at night and creatures in it beckoning me to join them, happy creatures. It was an elaborate cartoon, my only means of linear expression.
Later I came to show rocks, often blue rocks, blue being my signature colour, as edifices of life. This picture is a synthesis and I suspect it has what you might call intellectual content.
