Anthropomorphism extracts the sting from nature, its indifference, its cruelty, its inhumanity if you like. It's nonsense of course and it's for people like me who are not only childish but soft, squeamish and sentimental. Alongside this, though, other less obvious possibilities, even issues, may float up. Like, if animals were people they wouldn't be hunted, fished, experimented upon and otherwise victimised. And then it becomes a kind of statement. Grey squirrels also wouldn't be vilified and persecuted because they were one species, grey, and not another, the native Red. That would be xenophobia and racism of the grossest and most explicit kind, born of nothing other than their succes at life. |
