As the western world braces itself for a tidal wave of Chinese tourists there was a rather touching piece on the radio news to the effect that such voyagers have been admonished by their government to conduct themselves abroad with modesty and politeness, queueing patiently for example and not spitting in public.
I t might in reality be part of a cunning plan to take over the world as unobtrusively as possible but it put me instead in mind of an earlier time in history when visitors from foreign lands would be far from anonymous but rather colourful and exotic.
This oriental visitor has been blown by hurricanes over more than half the planet to the western Lake District, where a welcoming committee of native birds has been assembled to greet him and his precious cargo, and to guide them in to land.
