Foreword by Ian Courcoux

It is a couple of years or so since Michael Fairclough's last solo exhibition in the gallery and we are very pleased to have our walls full once again with the work of this outstanding painter.

Fairclough has a continued love affair with the west coast of Ireland which began more years ago than he probably cares to remember!   Whether it is Galway Bay, Owey Sound or the Burren Peninsula the outlook on to the Atlantic and the vast skies above never fail to bring the best out in his work, whether that be on paper, panel or canvas.

The scale of his subject seems to be further enhanced by the wonderful texture which he incorporate by mixing potter's grog with his oils.  This produces a surface which, when dry, feels almost like cement and its strength is implicit in the vastness of those great skies which take up so much of every painting.

I think of Michael as one of the finest British landscape painters whose work, especially on the larger canvases, is awesome in the true sense of the word.
