Born in 1961 in Cheltenham, Paul studied Fine Art at Cheltenham College of Art before moving to London in 1985. His career has taken him all over the world and he has painted in Africa, India, Indonesia and South America. In 1993, he spent three months as expedition artist on the first-ever crossing of the Taklamakan Desert in north-west China. |
The gallery has only been exhibiting Paul's work for a year or so and it is testament to the popularity of the paintings that we are already staging a solo exhibition. In this series of paintings, I believe that he has demonstrated the breadth of his talent. Paul's beloved River Itchen is the subject of the majority of the paintings and he captures the tranquility of the river bank in various seasons - the stillness and warmth of a summer's day, the golden hues of the leaves in autumn - scenes which will strike a chord with anyone who has spent any time in this neck of the woods. |
There are also a few scenes of London and Moray Firth seascapes. The South Bank works show another side of Paul's repertoire, capturing the hustle and bustle of the capital on a cold winter's day and incorporating a level of abstraction not to be found in the river paintings. |
These are paintings which lift my spirits as we move into another Hampshire summer. I am certain that the beholder cannot fail to appreciate them. Ian Courcoux |
