Foreword by Ian Courcoux and Christopher Marvell

This is Christopher Marvell's first exhibition with us and I am looking forward to showing his work. His subjects are human figures, birds and animals which exude humour and whimsy as well as strength.

Christopher is a great "ideas" man and the imagination which he incorporates into his work can be seen across the whole spectrum of his sculptures, from the powerful Cat Man to the ingenious fountains. Many of his bronzes are cast in his home village by the artist and his friends and he patinates everything himself.

Marvell is a "character" and I feel that it is best left to him to give the reader an insight into what makes him tick.

"I dislike CV's although I am always passionate about sculpture. The skills I learned at Newcastle seem very slight now compared to the vast practical knowledge and ingenuity of my old village builder friend George who has helped me build numerous gardens at the Chelsea Flower Show, co-designed my foundry and thinks long and hard at all the different fountain installations when we hit a problem.

I enjoy the hard physical work and atmosphere at the busy foundry and the spirit of making things work. Other sculptors have always been generously willing to share their latest clever techniques for overcoming difficulties.

Seeing two goats crated up for California or a Fisherman's Head bound for Australia gives me a thrill, as does a small fountain carefully sited in an exquisite courtyard. Sculpture really does seem to add that 'specialness' to a location. An extra stillness or elevation that the viewer can absorb effortlessly whilst walking round. A new angle reveals a completely different line -- sculpture should invite us to keep looking."
